General: Westhoughton is a popular residential town, with a population of approximately 20,000 residents. It was once a centre for mining, cotton spinning and textiles manufacture. Arguably the most famous person born in Westhoughton is the actor Robert Shaw of Jaws fame, of which there is a memorial and pub named in his honour.

Location: The M61 motorway runs through the North of Westhoughton, which is served by Junctions 5 & 6. Major roads including the A58, A6, B5236, B5325 and B5239 cross through the area allowing it to be a great point for commuters. Westhoughton has its own railway station and neighbouring Daisy Hill station is a stone’s throw away. Northern Rail cover Southport – Manchester via Wigan which makes regular stops at Westhoughton railway station. There is also a service to Manchester Piccadilly via Bolton. Westhoughton has excellent bus links with Bolton, Wigan and Leigh:

  • No 540 Stagecoach – to Bolton & Wigan
  • No 516 South Lancs Travel – Leigh to Horwich, covering Westhoughton
  • No 517 First/Maytree – Leigh to Horwich
  • No 715 Arriva – Bolton to Wigan, covering Westhoughton.

Local facilities: There is a large Sainsbury’s supermarket on Cricketers Way for all your shopping needs and smaller convenience stores dotted throughout Westhoughton. Westhoughton has a wide range of available facilities including hairdressers, restaurants, pubs, garages, library, shops etc. Westhoughton boasts a popular local market, voted Best Small Indoor Market 2012, which is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays each week and also a local produce market on the 1st Saturday of each month.

Leisure: Westhoughton Community Leisure Centre facilities include a gym, swimming pool, and usual sports facilities. There are three local nature reserves; Hall Lee Bank Park, Cunningham Clough and Eastock Lodge.
