Halliwell / Smithills / Barrow Bridge

General: Halliwell, Smithills and Barrow Bridge are residential areas of Bolton separated by the A58. They are located a couple of miles outside the town centre. With a history in industry and textiles, the areas are now predominantly commuting and residential areas. Barrow Bridge in particular has a history of housing industry workers with some quaint cottages situated in the area.
Location: Halliwell, Smithills and Barrow Bridge are situated just off the A58 near to Moss Bank Park and are only minutes from the town centre. The M61 runs to the west of the towns. The nearest railway station can be found at Hall-I-th-wood with rail connections into Manchester. The areas are well served by the Maytree bus services 525/526/527 into Bolton Town Centre.

Education: There are a number of schools in the area including St Thomas C, St Joseph’s RC Primary and Smithills School.
Local facilities: There are plenty of facilities in the area, particularly in Halliwell with pubs, cafes, hairdressers and garages available. The area is served by a number of supermarkets with Morrisons located on Mornington Road, Asda on Moss Bank Way and the Co-Operative on Chorley Old Road.
Leisure: Smithills Sports Centre on Dean Road consists of a swimming pool, fitness suite and sports courts. Separating the towns is Moss Bank Park which is ideal for family/dog walking. The manor house of Smithills Hall is also located in the area and is renowned for its ghostly tales.
